ABM Contractors are proud to be delivering the new extension at Coláiste Chraobh Abhann, Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow. This project was awarded under the National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) Devolved Schools Building Programme 2 — Project Boyne Lot 1.
The project involves the design and construction of a new two-storey school building extension, with a gross internal floor area of 5,779.4 square metres. The extension will include classrooms, dedicated support teaching and technology spaces, offices and meeting rooms, a general-purpose hall, a multi-use hall, a special needs unit, and various ancillary facilities. The works will also involve modifications to the existing school building to ensure seamless integration.
External works will feature four hard-surface ball courts, a grass sports pitch, outdoor seating and breakout areas, a sensory garden, a covered technology yard, and a 92 sqm external storage building with an adjacent refuse area. Additional infrastructure will include dedicated LPG and air source heat pump (ASHP) compounds and comprehensive hard and soft landscaping, including footpaths and public lighting.

New pedestrian routes, 96 parking spaces including 5 accessible bays, and improved traffic circulation.
The development will also involve modifications to the existing site entrance, with the addition of new pedestrian access routes and the construction of a separate vehicle egress point. Upgrades to the parking and access arrangements will include revised car pick-up and bus set-down zones, the provision of 96 car parking spaces (including 5 accessible bays), 10 electric vehicle charging points, and 105 sheltered cycle stands.
This project represents a significant enhancement to the school's capacity, functionality, and sustainability.
The site is located at Creowen, Kilcoole, just off the Newcastle Road towards the southern end of Kilcoole and is c3.2Ha.
A significant milestone was reached as Tánaiste Simon Harris turned the sod on the grounds for the new school extension, marking the official commencement of this transformative educational development for the Kilcoole community.
